How to use it

  1. Type the amount in figures. Commas are optional: 171808, 1,71,808 and 1,71,808.50 all work. Up to two decimals are read as paise.
  2. The words appear at once in English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati and Tamil.
  3. Turn Only on or off. Turn on Cheque style for Title Case English, the way most banks print it.
  4. Press Copy next to a language to copy that line, or Copy all for every language.

The Indian numbering system

Indian amounts are grouped in threes for the last three digits and in twos after that: ₹1,71,808 is one lakh seventy-one thousand eight hundred eight. 100 thousand make a lakh and 100 lakh make a crore. Words follow the same groups, which is why international converters ("one hundred seventy-one thousand") look wrong on an Indian bill.

Amount in words on a GST invoice

Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists what a tax invoice must show; the total in words is not on that list, but almost every business prints it because buyers, banks and auditors expect it. Write the bill total after round-off, the same figure as the "Total" box, so the two can be checked against each other. If the bill has paise, write them out ("and fifty paise") or round off to the rupee first.

Writing a cheque

  • Start close to the left edge, write "Rupees" and end with "Only" so nothing can be added after the amount.
  • Draw a line through the space left over.
  • The amount in words and in figures must match. If they differ, the bank can return the cheque.
  • Cheques are valid for three months from the date written on them.

Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati and Tamil words

Numbers from 1 to 99 have their own words in each of these languages (Hindi इकहत्तर, Marathi एकाहत्तर, Gujarati એકોતેર for 71), so they cannot be built by joining tens and units the way English does. Tamil also joins words together: 2,000 is இரண்டாயிரம், and 2,500 is இரண்டாயிரத்து ஐந்நூறு. The converter has the full word list for each language. The Hindi and English wording is the same one Moharbill prints on invoices.

Moharbill prints the amount in words on every invoice, in the language of the bill. See GST billing.

FAQ

Amount in words: common questions

Still unsure? Ask your CA, or write to us from the contact page.

How do I write 1,50,000 in words?

Rupees one lakh fifty thousand only. In Hindi: रुपये एक लाख पचास हज़ार मात्र.

How do I write paise in words?

Add them after "and": ₹250.75 is "Rupees two hundred fifty and seventy-five paise only".

Should I write "only" at the end?

On cheques and invoices, yes. It shows the amount is complete and stops anyone from adding words after it.

What is the largest amount it converts?

Up to 13 digits of rupees, so ₹99,99,99,999.99 and well beyond (lakh crore amounts are written as crore).

Is "lakh" or "lac" correct?

Both spellings are seen. "Lakh" is the more common spelling today, so we use it.

Is the amount I type saved?

No. The words are worked out in your browser and nothing is sent to us.
