What this GSTIN check tells you
A GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is the 15-character number every registered business gets. Its characters are not random, so a lot can be read from the number itself before anyone looks it up:
| Characters | What they are | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | State code of the registration (for example 27 Maharashtra, 24 Gujarat, 33 Tamil Nadu) | 27 |
| 3–12 | PAN of the business. The 4th PAN character tells the holder type: P individual, C company, F firm or LLP, H HUF, and so on | AAPFU0939F |
| 13 | Which registration this is for the same PAN in that state (1 for the first, then 2…9, A…Z) | 1 |
| 14 | The letter Z by default | Z |
| 15 | Check character, worked out from the first 14 by a fixed mod-36 formula | V |
The instant check above tests all of this in your browser. A wrong check character almost always means one character was mistyped when the GSTIN was copied from a bill or a WhatsApp message. The tool tells you which character the first 14 call for, so you know the number needs a second look.
Live status: active, cancelled or suspended
A GSTIN can be perfectly formed and still be cancelled or suspended. Before you bill a new party, or before you take input tax credit on a supplier's bill, check its live status. Check live status asks the GST system through our provider and shows the legal name, trade name, status, date of registration, taxpayer type and constitution of business. Results are kept for 7 days, so a GSTIN that anyone checked recently comes back instantly and doesn't use one of your free checks.
Why a wrong GSTIN costs money
- Input tax credit: your buyer can claim credit only for invoices that appear against their GSTIN. A typo puts your sale on someone else's GSTIN, or nowhere.
- E-invoice and e-way bill: the IRP and the e-way bill system validate the buyer's GSTIN. A cancelled or wrong GSTIN means the IRN or e-way bill is not generated and the truck waits.
- Returns: a mismatch between your GSTR-1 and your buyer's purchase records shows up in their GSTR-2B and becomes a follow-up call or a notice.
- Cancelled suppliers: credit on a bill from a supplier whose registration was cancelled is at risk. Check suppliers too, not only customers.
Checking many GSTINs at once
Switch to Bulk and paste up to 50 GSTINs, one per line or separated by commas, straight from Excel. Each is checked for format, state code and check digit, and you can copy just the wrong ones to fix in your party list. Live status for a whole list runs inside Moharbill, where your party master is rechecked every week and cancelled GSTINs are flagged before you bill them.
Privacy
The instant and bulk checks run entirely in your browser. For a live check we send only the GSTIN to the lookup. We count your daily checks with a hashed code, never your raw IP address, and we don't keep the GSTIN against who asked for it.
