Key points
- 2150 Duplicate IRN: the document is already registered. NIC's advice: don't fire the same request twice; save the IRN from the response and check for it before sending again.[1]
- The IRN is a hash of the document details, unique for the supplier for the whole financial year, so the same document always maps to the same IRN.[2]
- Most other rejections are arithmetic (2182, 2189, 2193, 2194), tax type (2172, 2227, 2234, 2235, 2240) or GSTIN problems (2211, 2212, 2265, 3028, 3029).[1]
- A cancelled IRN's invoice number cannot be reused, so renumbering to dodge 2150 creates a gap and a second document.[2]
Error 2150: Duplicate IRN
The IRN is computed from your GSTIN, the document type, the document number and the financial year. जाँचें If an IRN already exists for that document, the IRP refuses a second one with 2150.[1][2] Common causes:
- The first request succeeded but the response never reached your software (network drop or timeout), so it was sent again.
- Two people or two systems sent the same bill at the same time.
- A bill was e-invoiced from another tool or the portal earlier and then sent again from your software.
Fix: don't edit the bill number. Fetch the details of the IRN that already exists for that document and store them on the bill. The NIC API set includes a call to get IRN details by document details; ask your software provider whether they use it. जाँचें Then make sure your system records the IRN as soon as a response arrives, and checks for it before any retry, which is exactly NIC's advice.[1]
Other common IRP errors and fixes
| Code | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 2172 | IGST charged on an intra-state bill | If the buyer's place of supply is in your state, charge CGST + SGST. Only in the rare cases where the law requires IGST on an intra-state supply, set the "IGST on intra-state" flag.[1] |
| 2176 | Invalid HSN code | Check the code in the portal's HSN search; use 6 digits if aggregate turnover is above ₹5 Cr. If you are sure it is right, report it to the e-invoice helpdesk.[1][3] |
| 2182 | Line taxable values don't add up to the invoice total | Total taxable value must equal the sum of the lines.[1] |
| 2189 | Invalid total invoice value | Total = sum of item totals + other charges − discount, within ±₹1.[1] |
| 2193 | Assessable amount ≠ total amount − discount for an item | Recalculate the line: AssAmt = TotAmt − Discount.[1] |
| 2194 | Invalid total item value | Item total = assessable value + all taxes and cess + other charges, within ±₹1.[1] |
| 2211 | Supplier and recipient GSTIN are the same | Self-invoices are not allowed on the IRP.[1] |
| 2212 | Recipient shown as URP on a B2B type | Enter the buyer's actual GSTIN for B2B supplies.[1] |
| 2227 / 2234 | CGST and SGST unequal, or wrong amounts | Each must be taxable value × rate ÷ 2, within ±₹1.[1] |
| 2240 | Invalid GST rate for the HSN | Use a valid rate for the item; check the current rate notification.[1] |
| 2244 | Recipient pincode missing | Fill the buyer's pincode for that transaction type.[1] |
| 2265 | Buyer state code ≠ first two digits of buyer GSTIN | Fix the party master: state code must match the GSTIN.[1] |
| 3028 | GSTIN not present in the e-invoice system | Check the GSTIN; sync it from the GST portal using the e-invoice portal's Tax Payer / GSTIN search, then retry.[1] |
| 3029 | GSTIN not active | The buyer's GSTIN is inactive or cancelled. Check its status; if it is active on the GST portal, sync and retry. If cancelled, don't bill it as B2B.[1] |
Worked example: fixing 2189 and 2194
Rathi Paints & Hardware, Jaipur (sample firm) sends a bill that is rejected with 2194 on line 2. The line in its software:
| Field | Sent | Should be |
|---|---|---|
| Total amount (qty × rate) | ₹24,000.00 | ₹24,000.00 |
| Discount | ₹1,200.00 | ₹1,200.00 |
| Assessable value | ₹22,800.00 | ₹22,800.00 |
| CGST 9% + SGST 9% | ₹4,104.00 | ₹4,104.00 |
| Freight on the line (other charges) | ₹500.00 | ₹500.00 |
| Total item value | ₹26,904.00 | ₹27,404.00 |
The software left freight out of the line total: ₹22,800 + ₹4,104 + ₹500 = ₹27,404. The invoice total then also failed 2189, because it was built from the wrong line. Fixing the line formula clears both. Notice that the freight here is taxed as part of the line value only if your CA agrees it is part of the supply; if not, it belongs in invoice-level other charges.
Preventing rejections
- Store the IRN the moment a response arrives; never retry a bill that already has one.
- Verify every buyer GSTIN is active before billing, not after.
- Keep party state codes consistent with the first two digits of the GSTIN.
- Use 6-digit HSN codes if aggregate turnover is above ₹5 crore.
- Round per line and per invoice the same way the IRP checks: ±₹1 tolerance.
- For ₹10 Cr+ businesses, report within 30 days of the document date; after that the IRP refuses the bill.[4]
How Moharbill helps
- Checks the bill before the IRP call: GSTIN status, state codes, HSN length, tax head and the line arithmetic the IRP uses.
- Saves the IRN as soon as it arrives and never sends the same bill twice, so a timeout doesn't turn into 2150.
- Shows each rejection in plain words with the fix; the provider code stays in a small Details line for support.
- See e-invoice software and the free GSTIN check.
Frequently asked questions
What does error 2150 Duplicate IRN mean?
The IRP has already registered an IRN for this document: the same supplier GSTIN, document type, document number and financial year. It usually means the same request was sent twice.
How do I fix Duplicate IRN 2150?
Don't change the invoice number. Fetch the existing IRN details for that document and save them on the bill, and make your system store the IRN as soon as a response arrives so it never sends the same request again.
What is error 2172 in e-invoice?
IGST was charged on an intra-state supply. If the place of supply is in the supplier's state, charge CGST and SGST instead.
What does 3029 GSTIN is not active mean?
The buyer's GSTIN is inactive or cancelled in the e-invoice system. Check its status on the GST portal; if it is active there, sync it on the e-invoice portal and retry.
Can I reuse the invoice number after cancelling an IRN?
No. Once an IRN is cancelled, the same invoice number cannot be used again to generate an IRN.
